How I Fell in Love with Aubrey Organics Skin Care Products
by Rachael Baseley

One of the great things about working at The Doctors' Prescription for Healthy Living is that I am learning so much about taking care of myself. Not only am I learning about how to use vitamins, minerals, herbs and other nutritional supplements for better health, but also about the hidden dangers in consumer products.

That includes learning about the dangerous ingredients in some cosmetics and personal care products and also how to select products that are not only safe but also that are packed with herbal and nutritional healing agents.

It has been a fairly amazing transformation. You might at one time have called me a typical American consumer. My bathroom was full of products bought from the local grocery store. I didn't buy the cheapest, but I wanted value for money, and I wanted results. It was also convenient to shop at the grocery.

But, then, I started learning about the preservatives, scents, wetting agents and other ingredients used in cosmetics and personal care products. What I found most shocking is so many of the ingredients whose dangers were being exposed in our magazine were listed on the labels of the products in my very own home. I also learned that the government doesn't require premarket safety testing for cosmetic products. Almost anything can be put out there, no matter whether it presents long-term health risks. That some manufacturers are so reckless as to put chemicals that can cause cancer or that act like the female hormone estrogen into their products outraged me. And when I learned that some of the preservatives and fragrances manufactures put in their products can actually cause skin irritation and blemishes, that sealed the deal. Needless to say, my outlook has changed, and I have completely changed the products I use.

Here are some examples of what I am talking about from a recent market survey done by one of our reporters.

Alberto VO5 shampoo lists use of no less than three major ingredients with suspect safety records, including causing cancer in experimental studies: cocamide DEA (cancer-causing, according to an experimental study); lauramide DEA (possibly cancer-causing, according to an experimental study); and sodium laureth sulfate (often contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, a clear-cut carcinogen).

Almay Moisture Balance Moisture Lotion lists one ingredient (triethanolamine) known to cause formation of cancer-causing chemicals in the product and two ingredients (methylparaben and ethylparaben) that may act in the human body like the female hormone estrogen.

Maybelline Non Stop-All Day Wear, Revlon Age Defying All Day Lifting and Jane Oil Free foundations contain ingredients potentially contaminated with a known cancer-causing agent (1,4-dioxane) or with estrogen like properties (methylparaben).

Dial Liquid Antibacterial Soap contains two ingredients suspected of causing cancer in experimental studies (lauramide DEA and Blue 1) or that may be contaminated with experimental carcinogens.

If you want to learn more about buying safe cosmetics and other products, I recommend you purchase a copy of The Safe Shopper's Bible by David Steinman and Samuel S. Epstein, M.D. This is an ideal reference tool for learning about which products are safe, and which ingredients may give you contact dermatitis or may even be cancer causing.

Final Word

These are the products I have tried. They may not suit you. Your skin and hair will have different needs to mine, and you may prefer different natural scents and aromas. The best recommendation I can make is to do what I did: visit your local natural health center, and have a look at what they have on display.

Aubrey Organics has a vast assortment of different natural beauty productsóall without the dangerous chemicals found in drug store, grocery and even high-end department store brands. Ask your local retailer for advice on what you should try. They are very helpful and friendly and can provide you with useful, honest facts on what is best for you and your budget. I know that these products cost more than those store-bought products you could be buying — but what price do you put on your personal health and the health of your family?

What I Have Learned— Fortunately, there are many safe alternatives to these store-bought products. After learning about Aubrey Organics, and seeing so many of my friends using their products, I decided to try some out for myself.

Deodorant

E Plus I started out with the basics. I had been looking for a safe, effective deodorant for some time. I found the perfect formula in Aubrey's E Plus High C Natural Roll-On Deodorant. It works; it lasts all day and doesn't have a strong aroma; instead it is a pleasing blend of natural oils and vitamins. This is a great product, and I tell everyone about it. It doesn't contain any aluminum or other harsh chemicals.

Facial Products

My next priority was to protect my face from the extreme environmental pollution of Southern California and to avoid damage from exposure to the harsh desert sun. I found my manna in Aubrey's Natural & Herbal Facial Cleanser, followed by Herbal Facial Astringent and then Green Tea & Ginkgo Daily Moisturizer SPF 15. Together, this regimen has worked really well for me — better than the other cheaper products I'd been using — especially as I don't like to apply strong-smelling creams to my face or body.

Being fair skinned and residing in Southern California, I know how important it is to protect my skin daily. That's why I've also begun using Aubrey's Green Tea Sunblock for Children SPF 25. This is a very thick sunscreen with a slightly green tinge, which tells me that there is protective green tea in the product and, unlike with some products, not just a trace — enough so that green tea can be listed on the label.

Green Tea I've also learned that natural cosmetics work differently than their synthetic cousins. For example, Green Tea Sunblock for Children SPF 25 needs to be rubbed into the skin thoroughly and you can clearly see where you have applied the sunscreen. Although traces of it may be apparent, this formula is much gentler and my eyes sting much less than when I used some of the mainstream synthetic sunscreen products. Also, it is easy to forget which skin areas you have covered and which you have missed. But with Green Tea Sunblock for Children SPF 25, when you take your children out to the park, mountains or beach, you can be assured you've done all you can to protect your family. This product offers you the chance to avoid the risks of skin cancer associated with excess sun exposure.

One last product I use on my face is Aubrey's Apricot & Amidroxy Exfoliation Mask. The formula contains natural fruit acids, Rosa Mosqueta rose oil and tea tree oil in a coconut fatty acid base and oatmeal blend. I use Apricot & Amidroxy Exfoliation Mask once weekly to clean away any dead, dry skin, and to keep my skin looking and feeling smooth and young.

Although I am in my early thirties, I still suffer from occasional breakouts, so I have to be careful what I apply on my skin. That's why I like the fact that this formula contains tea tree oil, which helps to clear up my complexion. Indeed, the Aubrey Organics line has improved the appearance of my skin so much, people have even commented on how much more clearly it looks lately. To me, that is proof plenty that these skin care products work.

In the Shower

Herbal Soap For a great all-over body soap, I use Herbal Liquid Body Soap, a blend of natural oils and vitamins that is very mild; this is also a vegan formula and it doesn't contain any suspect cancer-causing chemicals like the Dial product detailed above.

The whole family can use it, and you know you are getting clean effectively and safely without applying potentially harmful chemicals onto your skin. Being a woman, I can't help but be interested in taking good care of my skin and hair. Shampoo and conditioner are a vital part of my daily routine. They have to work well, make my fine hair look shiny and clean, and help protect it from split ends and breakage caused by tangles.

Rosa Mosqueta Herbal Shampoo has a beautiful aroma and is designed for dry, damaged hair. This is perfect for me, as my hair becomes quite dry in summer. I follow this with GPB (Glycogen Protein Balancer) Hair Conditioner and Nutrient. It leaves my hair soft, shiny and manageable. I understand that GPB Glycogen Protein Balancer is one of Aubrey's most popular products. It's such a gentle yet effective conditioner. My friends always tell me my hair looks great after I use it.
