My Favorite Men's Shaving Cream
, from
Healthy Living
, By David Steinman, M.A.
It may not seem like a big deal to some, but a long time ago I grew tired of personal care product companies putting carcinogen precursors in my shaving cream. Also, the products I was using when I didn't know any better (i.e., Barbasol and Gillette) felt artificial. I didn't particularly care for the way they left my skin feeling.
Aubrey Organics' Men's Stock
Herbal Mint & Ginseng Shaving Cream
is free from carcinogen precursors and conditions my skin better than any shaving cream I have ever used. I also get a smooth shave with fewer nicks and cuts.
Carcinogens in Men's Shaving Products
Next time you go to the supermarket, look at your brand of shaving cream. Brands such as Barbasol, Colgate, Edge, Gillette, and Noxema usually contain an innocuous sounding chemical called triethanolamine (also known as TEA on product labels). Fatty acids like TEA are used as emollients and thickeners in numerous consumer products, including cosmetic formulations, shampoos, hair dyes, and bath additives.
Triethanolamine by itself is not particularly toxic but it usually contains small amounts of diethanolamine (also abbreviated on labels as DEA). In a recent experimental study conducted under the auspices of the federal National Toxicology Program, diethanolamine was found to cause liver tumors.
To make matters worse, DEA forms an even more potent carcinogen in the presence of nitrosating contaminants that enter raw materials through the environment or from bulk storage containers. The carcinogen (known as nitrosodiethanolamine) may even be formed while products sit on store shelves. Not all products will become contaminated, but some will and some won't. The consumer has no way of knowing which products contain carcinogenic contaminants.
Prescription for Healthy Living
I don't know what all of these little carcinogenic exposures do to people's health. Neither does anyone else. Cancer is too prevalent in our modern era. A significant percentage of cancers are probably caused by environmental factors, including carcinogenic chemicals in consumer products. It is difficult to say precisely what percentage.
The presence of TEA in cosmetics is unnecessary. The cosmetic industry has many alternatives from which to choose. Also, with cancer striking more than one in three Americans, it seems that our Food and Drug Administration ought to take immediate action to prevent further exposure to avoidable carcinogens such as those found in cosmetics, toiletries and liquid soaps.
Aubrey Hampton, founder of Aubrey Organics, knows safe and effective alternatives to TEA and DEA are readily available. In fact, his company's dedication to carcinogen-free cosmetics and personal care products has helped to create a line of products that work better, are more natural, and safer than the usual men's shaving products.
Instead of TEA, Aubrey uses a carcinogen-free essential fatty acid base. By adding aloe vera, camomile, ginseng root, elder, nettle, rosemary, sage, evergreen and avocado oils, menthol and pine needle extract, he helps men get close, smooth shaves without increasing their cancer risk. Our skin feels naturally firm and conditioned.
We have always stated that, whenever possible, health-conscious consumers should avoid carcinogenic exposures. But there's something else here, too. It bothers us that manufacturers don't care enough about their products to strive for the very best. But none of us have to support them.
On the other hand, Aubrey Organics does care. It is more costly to produce cosmetics in small batches, to use safe preservatives, to avoid carcinogen precursors, and to add quality extracts of ginseng and other herbs to shaving cream. But here is one way where we are protecting our health and getting a great shave. That sounds like a great deal.
