Save Your Complexion with Nontoxic Makeup
By David Steinman, from Healthy Living
Is your foundation toxic? You'll know by evaluating your skin's condition. If you see redness, inflammation, tiny acne-like pimples or other blemishes, it may be time to start using nontoxic makeup. Foundations and other facial makeup are the third leading cause of contact dermatitis among cosmetics users. So it is especially important to choose brands with the least number of problem ingredients.
Furthermore, some brands of foundation contain a wide range of allergens and irritants and your exposure will be all day.
Contact Dermatitis
Brands containing 2-bromo-2-nitroproane-1,3-diol or quaternium 15 could expose you to formaldehyde, a sensitizing and allergenic ingredient for a lot of people, or otherwise irritate your skin. Furthermore, people with sensitive skin may have problems with fragrances and propylene glycol; both can sting. For some people, triethanolamine (TEA) can be irritating.
Foundations often cause a condition known medically as cosmetic acne, characterized by very small pimples that occur intermittently. Cosmetic acne affects about one-third of all women in their twenties through their fifties at one time or another. If you are suffering from small blemishes, especially pimples, and you are not sure why, try switching to our nontoxic formulas.
Carcinogens
Stay away from products containing 2-bromo-2-nitroproane-1,3-diol, which can break down into formaldehyde or, under certain conditions, cause formation of carcinogenic nitrosamines. TEA should also be avoided, as it too can cause nitrosamine formation.
The extra-careful shopper may want to avoid ingredients ending in eth as in ceteareth-20. These may be contaminated with the carcinogen 1,4-dioxane. Polyethylene glycol or "PEG" compounds may also be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane or breakdown into formaldehyde. Shoppers may want to avoid these, too.
