Safe, Natural Fragrances

David Steinman By David Steinman, from Healthy Living

Fragrances are extraordinarily important cosmetic and personal care product ingredients‹for both men and women. Very often, they are used to mask the unpleasant odors of necessary elements with excellent effects on skin and hair that may be used in cosmetic formulas. They also heighten a person's sex appeal, attractiveness and desirability.

Synthetic fragrances may also be among the most dangerous ingredients in cosmetics today. They are certainly the single leading cause of cosmetic-related allergy, sensitization, and irritation. If you suffer watery eyes, reddened skin, irritation, or allergic reactions, the culprit could very likely be the fragrance added to cosmetics and personal care products. Other |commonly reported symptoms include spaciness, nausea, mood changes, depression, lethargy, restlessness, irritability, anger, memory lapses, and inability to concentrate.

Many chemicals found in synthetic fragrances are designated as hazardous, including methylene chloride, toluene, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, ethyl alcohol, and benzyl chloride. Yet manufacturers are not required to list on product labels the ingredients used in formulating their fragrances, scents, and perfumes. In other words, if these products are carried to a hazardous waste site in your community, you have the right to know, but if you are going to apply them to the skin, you do not.

Once, fragrances did not pose the same degree of hazard that they do today. For thousands of years herbs, flowers, and animals such as the Asian musk deer, beaver, and sperm whale have been sources of fragrances. However, expanding consumer demand and scarcity of these resources‹coupled with advanced technology‹led to a whole new area of synthetic fragrances, and today some 95 percent of the mix in most fragrances is made from synthetic chemicals.

Toxic Witches Brew

Many major cosmetic brands that you see advertised in fashion magazines contain fragrances derived from mixtures of six hundred or more raw materials and synthetic chemicals. Few have been tested for their safety. A recent government report targeted fragrances as one of the six categories of chemicals that should be given highest priority for neurotoxicity testing‹along with insecticides, heavy metals, solvents, food additives, and air pollutants. In fact, some 84 percent of the ingredients used in fragrances have never been tested for human toxicity, or tested only minimally. Meanwhile, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health reports that 884 toxic substances were identified in a list of 2,983 chemicals used in the fragrance industry as capable of causing breathing difficulty, allergic reactions, multiple chemical sensitivities, and other serious maladies, including neurotoxicity. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) acknowledges that the incidence of adverse reactions to perfume products appears to be increasing and that these reactions involve the immune system and cause neurotoxic reactions. Most recently, the Environmental Health Network of California filed a petition with the FDA to have the fragrance Eternity by Calvin Klein declared "misbranded." The basis of this petition is the lack of a warning label on the product informing consumers that all the materials in the product, and the product, itself, allegedly, have not been adequately tested for safety.

Natural Fragrances: Smart Choice for Sensitive Skin

Consumers are generally less likely to suffer allergic reactions and irritation if they use naturally sourced colognes and fragrances‹or products without any fragrances at all. As noted earlier, synthetic fragrances can be made up of six hundred or more raw ingredients. "This blend of many different ingredients can cause a problem if you have an allergic reaction to that blend because it can be difficult to isolate the one that is causing the problem," says Aubrey Hampton, Ph.D., author of Natural Organic Hair and Skin Care (Organica Press 1987) and founder of Aubrey Organics, a cosmetic and personal care line that uses only naturally sourced fragrances.

Recommended Natural Fragrance Lines

In fact, the Aubrey Organics line of natural colognes for men and women is highly recommended for use by members of our health advisory board because these blends are entirely naturally derived from plant sources without animal materials. Aubrey Organics also uses only those essential oils and isolates obtained without synthetic chemicals or toxic substances. If you're looking for a truly natural fragrance or cologne, you should try the Aubrey Organics line. Both their cosmetics and specific colognes may be the best formulas available today for men and women with sensitive skin or who are allergic to synthetic fragrances.

Natural Colognes for Smart Shoppers

Aubrey Organics has created a line of great colognes, suitable for men and women, whose beauty is in their fragrance and simplicity. Derived from a few essential oils or isolates, Aubrey Organics uses as a carrying agent natural grain alcohol, which evaporates on the skin and does not cause drying. Among the most popular totally natural colognes today, Angelica combines the root extract of angelica with other mixed wildflower and herbal oils.

Elysian Fields was designed to be a natural counterpart to the finest French perfumes but without synthetic ingredients. The fragrance is derived from pine oil, herbal essential oils, and wood notes.

Lemon Blossom is a wonderful "body splash" derived from lemon peel and blossom essential oils that also provides vitamin E and essential fatty acids to leave the skin soft and smooth.

Musk Splash is entirely plant-derived, yet superior to animal musk oil fragrances. It combines oak musk, rose musk, musk seeds, and other herbal essential oils for a delightful, warm natural musk fragrance.

Wild Wind is also an alternative to animal musk oil derived from fragrant hibiscus musk seeds.
