Green Tea-based Cosmetics and Youthful Skin: A Beautiful Combination

By Megan Shields, M.D., from Healthy Living

If your skin needs help fighting the aging effects of the environment and craves protection from irritants and allergens found in many cosmetic products, Aubrey Organics' new line of green tea-based cosmetics should be your first choice.

Green tea is one of the most important anti-aging super- stars today. If you're not quaffing green tea daily or using green tea-based personal care products and cosmetics, you may be missing out on one of the most important healthy skin herbs available today.

And if you're not using Aubrey Organics line of green tea-based cosmetics and personal care products but choosing products with formaldehyde-based preservatives and other potentially dangerous ingredients, well, you may be placing yourself at a higher risk for allergies, irritation, and possibly even cancer. On the other hand, using the right cosmetics and personal care products can even help you to reduce your risk of cancer, particularly that of the skin, as well as ward off premature aging.

Topical Green Tea Reduces Skin Cancer Risk>

The fastest growing cancer in America today is skin cancer (melanoma), which is caused by exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays and sometimes from chemicals that come into contact with the skin. The mortality rate of malignant melanoma, a potentially fatal skin cancer associated with sun exposure, is rapidly increasing. Malignant melanoma among men increased 50% between 1973 and 1988, from 2.2 to 3.3 per 100,000, reports the National Cancer Institute. The largest recorded increase was among men age 50 and older. Sharp increases are also occuring in white women under 45.

Furthermore, although it was once thought that people with pale skin, light or red hair, and blue or gray eyes were the prime target, melanomas are now being found in Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Hawaiin, and other, darker skinned persons. If the protective ozone surrounding the planet continues to be destroyed, the Environmental Protection Agency estimates the occurrence of an additional 12 million cases of skin cancer and 200,000 skin cancer-related deaths in the next 40 years.

Green Tea to the Rescue

Clearly, our skin requires extra protection these days. That's where green tea becomes a valuable ally, one that we should want in our cosmetics and personal care products.

Green tea's potent phytochemicals, especially its catechins, have been shown to be highly effective protectors against skin cancer, as well as providing other beneficial effects. Green tea works both when consumed as a beverage and applied topically, according to a 1994 report in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. According to the report, applying benzol peroxide (commonly used in acne medications) to skin has been shown to quickly promote tumors. Applying green tea topically to the same area prior to the application of benzoyl peroxide significantly protects against such skin tumors.

Green tea, according to the same report, also protects against the sun's ultraviolet rays when both applied topically and consumed as a beverage. The report concludes that "green tea may reduce the risk of some forms of human cancer induced by solar radiation."

What's more exciting is that recently a report in the journal Biochemical Society Transactions found that green tea may possibly be the most powerful plant-based antioxidant yet studied.

How Green Tea Works and other Benefits

How does green tea offer so much protection? Green tea's phytochemicals increase the performance of a number of the body's most important detoxification enzymes, including catalase and glutathione peroxidase, according to a 1994 report in the Quarterly Review of Natural Medicine. Not only do glutathione, peroxidase and catalase provide the body with cancer fighting protection, green tea's catechins are estimated to be 20 times more potent than even vitamin E, one of the body's most important antioxidants and cancer protectors.

Green tea offers other substantial benefits. It is a natural astringent and antibacterial agent that can help to detoxify and purify the skin at the same time that it helps to ward off the ravages of sun-related photoaging. What's more, for anyone who uses alpha hydroxy acid skin peels, green tea also helps to prevent irritation of the skin caused by glycolic acid and other irritating chemicals used in skin peels and facial masks. According to some experts, green tea may even have anti-cellulite properties.

As you can see, a lot of good reasons can be found for using green tea-based cosmetics and personal care products. It's smart and healthy.

The Best Green Tea-based Skin Care Products Today

Based on these and other scientific reports, one company, Aubrey Organics, of Tampa, Florida, has created an entire, nine-product line of green-tea based cosmetics, which we strongly recommend for anyone interested in a healthy and natural beauty regimen. Their five-step program is probably one of the best regimens now available for fighting premature skin aging and the effects of pollution on the skin. The originator of this skin care regimen, Aubrey Hampton, is one of the nation's most respected and knowledgeable producers of truly natural, safe cosmetics and personal care products. The Aubrey line is entirely handcrafted and free from harsh, unsafe chemicals. Moreover, Aubrey Organics uses a special type of matcha green tea that is made from only young leaves, is extremely concentrated, and added straight to their products without being diluted. Matcha green tea is very rich in methylxanthines which are believed by researchers at the National Cancer Institute to help to prevent skin cancer.

Green Tea-based Products for Other Personal Care Needs

We love the Aubrey line of green tea cosmetics because of their purity and truly natural ingredients. Also, be sure to consider these green tea-based products, too:
  • Hair Treatment Shampoo. A light conditioning formula that uses coconut-corn oil soap and plant-based proteins, this formula avoids all known irritants and allergens to bring consumers a truly safe and natural shampooing experience.
  • Herbal Cream Rinse. This conditioning blend of herbal hair nutrients includes chamomile, coltsfoot, horsetail, nettle, and sage. These herbs have a long history of use for beautiful hair. Coltsfoot and horsetail are particularly rich sources of silica and the amino acid cysteine, which are highly beneficial for a healthy head of hair.
  • Hand & Body Lotion with Evening Primrose. Designed especially for dry, problem skin, this formula is rich in evening primrose oil, a source of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and other essential fatty acids that are necessary to healthy skin. Evening primrose is a proven healing agent for dermatitis, psoriasis and other skin conditions. If your skin is dry or scaly, this product with its evening primrose oil, could be extremely important for you to use.
The Doctors' Recommendation

According to The Safe Shopper's Bible (Macmillan 1995), the Aubrey line is completely free of formaldehyde-based preservatives, such as imidazolidinyl urea and quaternium 15, both of which are commonly found in the leading drug and department store brands, and are a leading cause of allergies and irritation among cosmetic users.

Aubrey Organics uses only the mildest, yet effective preservatives available: vitamins A (retinyl palmitate), C (ascorbyl palmitate), and E (alpha tocopherol); and citrus seed extract. Besides acting as preservatives, vitamins A, C, and E are key antioxidants that can help to ward off premature skin aging including wrinkling and blotching. Many commercially available cosmetics use ingredients such as diethanolamine and triethanolamine (often abbreviated as DEA and TEA respectively). Although these chemicals are harmless by themselves, they are also highly reactive, and often interact with other chemicals in cosmetic products to form cancer-causing nitrosamines, increasing consumers' long-term cancer risks. The Aubrey line is completely free from known nitrosating chemicals.

By eliminating these ingredients from their products and using generous amounts of herbal healers and antioxidant vitamins, Aubrey Organics has placed its products at the forefront for consumer safety and innovation in the cosmetic industry. Clearly, Aubrey Organics is one of the leading brands today.

Their green tea cosmetic and personal care product line is available at health food stores nationwide. You can find the store nearest you by calling Aubrey Organics at (800) AUBREY-H or writing to them at Aubrey Organics, 4419 North Manhattan Avenue, Tampa, Florida 33614. Visit their website at www.aubrey-organics.com.

Be sure to practice good sun sense. Protect your skin from too much sun exposure with protective clothing and by avoiding direct sun during its most powerful hours of eleven to three p.m. daily. Green tea cosmetics and personal care products should also be part of your overall sun-protection program. They can make an important contribution to your fight against premature skin aging.

The Five Step Green Tea Beauty Program

Here's the skin care regimen that Aubrey Organics recommends and that we endorse as a sensible beauty program for helping to ward off premature skin aging:
  • Step One. Steam with Green Tea Aromatherapy Concentrate. After removing make-up, pour four cups of boiling water into a heat-proof bowl and add Green Tea Aromatherapy Concentrate. Hold a towel over your head and, with eyes closed, allow steam to flow over your face for two minutes. This formula helps to improve circulation, detoxify the complexion, and prepare your skin for cleansing.
  • Step Two. Cleanse with Green Tea Facial Cleansing Lotion. One of the most skin-soothing herbs known today is aloe vera. Aubrey Organics uses only organic aloe vera. This is combined with blue camomile which has been used since ancient times for soothing problem skin. Squeeze a small amount of Green Tea Facial Cleansing Lotion onto fingers or washcloth and work well over the skin, then rinse with warm water.
  • Step Three. Gently Exfoliate with Green Tea & Green Clay Rejuvenating Facial Mask. One of our favorites, this facial mask should be used daily for restoring the skin to a more youthful appearance. Clay has a long history of use for purifying the skin. The formula's seaweed complex including fucus, laminaria, sea ware and bladderwrack, is soothing, nourishing and restorative. Apply evenly to face and allow to remain on five to ten minutes. Wipe mask off with a damp washcloth and rinse with warm water.
  • Step Four. Tone with Green Tea & Ginkgo Facial Toner. This toner, for all skin types, is completely free of fragrance and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives‹both are leading causes of allergies among cosmetic users. In addition to green tea, Green Tea & Ginkgo Facial Toner contains Ginkgo biloba, a powerful antioxidant that may have anti-aging benefits for the skin, myrrh which is an excellent astringent and purifier, and rosemary, a toning agent with antioxidant properties. Dampen cotton pad and wipe across face and neck with upward strokes, changing cotton as needed.
  • Step Five. Moisturize with Green Tea & Ginkgo Daily Moisturizer. This unique moisturizer uses powerful healing, purifying antioxidant herbs such as milk thistle and Ginkgo biloba with naturally sourced para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), an excellent natural sunscreen with very low allergy potential. Apply a small amount to fingers and massage gently into skin. This formula softens and hydrates the complexion with organic aloe vera, shea butter and doubles as a sun-screen with a sun protection factor of 15! It's excellent for its rejuvenating and skin-protecting abilities, especially from the sun's solar radiation.
