How to Have Beautiful Hands — Even If You Wash Dishes, from Healthy Living

What homemakers haven't wondered what on earth they can do to heal the rough, dry, scaly condition of their hands? We know of a number of homemakers whose condition is so bad, they use Super Glue to close up the cracks in their hands. This condition—known commonly as dishpan hands or housewives' eczema—is typically caused by sensitivity to or excessive use of household detergents or cleaning agents. Eczema is a term used for a group of skin conditions having several things in common: dryness, itching, inflammation and thickening of skin, and recurrence.

Your home should be a place of refuge where your body can heal and regroup from the stresses of the outside world. With a polluted home, just the opposite is true. That is why you should be careful that the products you use in your home contain the safest ingredients available. This is especially so for the homemakers who may be exposed to as many toxic chemicals and at higher amounts in their daily work as a man or woman who goes off to a factory to work everyday.

Aubrey's #1 Recommended Formula for Dry, Cracking Skin

white camellia oil Our first recommendation is based on a recommendation by Karyn Trumbach, personal beauty consultant from Aubrey Organics, one of America's leading natural skin care companies. "Our white camellia oil is my favorite product for dry hands and cracking skin," she says. "White camellia oil is a wonderfully calming, soothing emollient. In my experience, it surpasses all other products for women with problem hands. Usually, you don't want to put products on broken skin. But white camellia oil is so mild, and it also possesses extremely powerful antioxidant properties, much like its close relative, green tea." Look for Aubrey's White Camellia Cream Hand and Body Emollient with 25 percent white camellia oil, as well as macadamia nut and linoleic acid-rich sunflower seed oils. This nontoxic formula may be all your hands require for eliminating dry, cracking skin.

Here are some more tips for helping to soothe and eliminate dry cracking hands:

Use an antiinflammatory hand cream. Anti-inflammatory herbs such as Canadian willowherb, aloe, and grape seed extract, found in Aubrey Organics' Blue Green Algae Herbal Antioxidant Hand & Body Lotion with Grape Seed Extract block allergic/immune skin reactions, which trigger eczematous rashes, and can speed healing of inflamed and cracked skin regardless of the cause.

Calaguala Liposome Cream Use moisturizers twice daily (more often on hands) to hydrate and soften skin, and reduce itching. Most moisturizers are lotions or hand creams that leave an oily coating on your skin to prevent evaporation and dryness. But formulas with extra-powerful humectants can draw moisture from the air into your skin to soften the skin, soothe rashes, and stop itching. Calaguala Liposome Cream from Aubrey Organics is a hydrating liposome-based cream for even the driest, roughest skin. Calaguala was used as far back as 350 B.C., when Mayan Indians discovered its soothing effect on extremely dry skin. Today, scientific studies from Harvard University have shown us that calaguala is highly healing for a variety of skin conditions. Calaguala Liposome Cream uses this ancient herb with modern liposome technology to create a richly hydrating formula that works day and night to soothe very dry skin. Liposomes are able to deeply penetrate the skin well beyond the surface, releasing their ingredients over time so one application works for hours. Calaguala Liposome Cream contains white pine bark extract and evening primrose oil, excellent skin soothers, moisturizers, and antiinflammatory agents. Its humectant liposomes contain panthenol, phospholipids, and sodium hyaluronate. Its moisturizing liposomes contain sodium PCA, phospholipids, vitamin E, xanthan gum, arginine, lysine, glycine, and proline. In particular, sodium hyaluronate, a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan, has exceptional lubricating qualities. It plays an important role in a number of physiological functions, including cell protection and lubrication, maintenance of the structural integrity of tissues, transport of molecules, and fluid retention and regulation.

Earth Aware Try to determine what exposures aggravate your rash and avoid them. Many cleaning products contain fragrances, solvents and detergents that are drying and irritating to the skin. Because of their commitment to helping homemakers create a nontoxic home environment, Aubrey Organics has created several important nontoxic cleaning products. Earth Aware is an all-herbal, all-purpose cleaning formula that combines Calaguala Liposome Cream to clean most surfaces in your home without harming your health or the health of our planet. It contains no sulfates, phosphates or chlorine bleaches and can be used on dishes and floors. It also doubles as a laundry detergent and is mild enough for fine washables. Meanwhile, Aubrey's Liquid Sparkle is a spray formula that works great on glass and countertops. Both products are free from sodium lauryl sulfate, fragrances and other common irritants homemakers encounter in less safe cleaning products.

Use oatmeal-based cleansers to remoisturize the dry stratum corneum skin layer, lubricate, and help control your itching. Use oatmeal-based cleansing bars as soap replacements since they won't strip your skin of helpful surface oils and will allow more of your skin's natural oils to remain in the stratum corneum layer. Allowing those natural oils to remain and build up further is crucial to prevention and treatment of dry and damaged eczematous skin. Try Aubrey's Meal & Herbs Exfoliation Skin Care Bar. This rough-to-the-touch bar offers the mild scrubbing action of oatmeal, almond and walnut meals, plus herbal emollients to keep skin from drying out.
