Solving Hair & Skin Problems with Aubrey Hampton, Founder of Aubrey Organics, from Healthy Living

Aubrey Hampton Our readers communicate with us frequently about various health and beauty problems. These often include skin and hair problems, ranging from swimmer's hair to enlarged pores. This month, we discuss solutions to skin and hair problems with Aubrey Hampton, founder and CEO of Aubrey Organics, of Tampa, Florida, the nation's leader in truly natural hair and skin cosmetics.

The Doctors' Prescription for Healthy Living: Aubrey, this winter, a lot of people will exercise by using indoor pools and swimming daily. How should these people deal with swimmer's hair?

Aubrey Hampton: The main problem with swimming is that chlorine makes the hair extremely dry, causing breakage and tearing. Using shampoos that contain synthetic detergents, mineral oil, propylene glycol or some other petrochemical or oil won't work. If your shampoo contains these, your hair will continue to become drier. We have a whole line for swimmer's hair that emphasizes increased soluble protein to repair the hair and other ingredients that help to lower the pH of the hair. This is important. We reverse the damage. For example, our Swimmers Shampoo contains corn syrup to help remove chlorine; vegetable glycerin instead of propylene glycol to remoisturize the hair; and citric acid to lower the pH. Shea butter, panthenol, almond oil and allantoin (comfrey extract) are good ingredients to remoisturize the hair and keep it strong. We also have a Swimmers Conditioner and Swimmers Moisturizer SPF 15 with Aubrey's fatty acid cream base, aminobenzoic Acid (PABA), St. John's wort oil, jojoba butter, and other ingredients that are particularly good for swimmers since these help reverse dehydration and dryness of the skin.

dphl: Aubrey, what do you recommend as a makeup remover?

ah: I recommend jojoba oil or Herbessence Complexion Oil (both are especially good for removing oil-based makeup). For removing water-based makeup, I suggest our Natural & Herbal Facial Cleanser with our exclusive coconut fatty acid base, castile soap, organic aloe vera gel, witch hazel, eucalyptus, menthol, camphor, olive oil, and a natural herbal complex (elder, nettle, rosemary, sage, camomile, myrrh, mint and lemon grass).

Being both a playwright and theatre owner, I frequently work with actors who prefer this cleanser to all others to remove their makeup, especially since it removes oil-based makeup.

All you have to do is apply to the skin with fingers, cotton, or a clean makeup sponge and just wipe and the makeup is gone. Plus, the formula leaves the skin in perfect condition.

dphl: Which of your products work best for oily skin?

ah: We have a product called Amino Derm Gel Special Care Complex for Oily Skin, a facial spot treatment that is excellent for acne and oily skin. It is a thick gel and is very high in amino acids. Among its ingredients are red seaweed, watercress, soapwort, burdock, lemon and sage extracts — along with calamine powder and goa herb. This formula definitely reduces oily skin problems. It's great for blemishes, too.

Our Maintenance for Young Skin Moisturizer is a moisturizer for skin that tends to be oily and is designed especially for young skin, which may be putting out too much oil. It is a dry-type moisturizer, so instead of making the skin oilier, it makes it less oily, but smooth and conditioned.

dphl: Which of your products work best for enlarged pores?

ah: Masks are excellent. Think of masks as the ultimate nutrient delivery system. Because a mask is much more thick than a moisturizer or topical treatment and because of its extended application and the inner warmth generated which opens the pores, passage of nutrients into the skin occurs more quickly. When necessary, masks can also remove excess oil and environmental debris and pollutants much more gently than astringents, toners or scrubs. We have a variety of different masks. If you have skin that breaks out frequently with blackheads, if you have acne, oily skin or broken blood vessels in the area of your nose or near the surface of the skin, deep-cleansing masks can help. These masks are almost always clay based, using ingredients such as kaolin. When allowed to dry, clay naturally extracts impurities from the pores of the skin and helps to constrict broken blood vessels, making them less noticeable. Deep cleansing masks may also contain seaweeds and exfoliating ingredients such as papaya that stimulate renewal by gently removing dead skin cells from the top layers of the epidermis. Algae and seaweeds such as fucus, laminaria, seaware, bladderwrack are rich sources of trace minerals that are more able to penetrate the skin, providing both detoxifying effects and nourishment. Papaya is a wonderful exfoliant. Kaolin draws out impurities. Most suitable for oily, combination and acne prone skins, jojoba oil has excellent moisturizing and emulsifying properties. Jojoba is rich in vitamin E, contains proteins and minerals, as well as myristic acid, which is an anti-inflammatory agent. This is one of the most versatile oils for massage and beauty. It is good for all skin types and helps unclog the pores. It is excellent for inflamed or irritated conditions.

Our Sea Wonders Sea Clay Facial Mask is a premiere deep cleansing formula. It contains kaolin and each of the botanicals detailed. Blue Green Algae Herbal Antioxidant Clay Mask is excellent for both nourishing the skin and drawing out impurities.

dphl: Which of your products work best for premature wrinkling or leathering of the skin?

ah: What you do is follow the regimen of cleaning your skin using a mask, and then on any areas that are wrinkled, for example the fissures at the edges of the eyes, the lines at the mouth, apply Rosa Mosqueta Rose Hip Seed Oil. Rub in, and then on top of this, apply Rosa Mosqueta Cream. You're getting two things happening there: You're getting the oil, and you're getting the cream, which is like a moisturizer, with the oil in it as well. We have had fantastic results with these products. Some of the most famous models — whose names I can't mention — use it. They use a lot of makeup and they're under lights, and they use Rosa Mosqueta to prevent wrinkling of the skin. You rub the oil in for up to a minute, avoiding getting it in the eyes, because it is an oil. By the way, we have a product coming out called Lumessence, which utilizes Rosa Mosqueta and other ingredients that will be on the market in a few months.

dphl: What are the best hair conditioners that you have formulated for curly hair?

Sea Buckthorn conditioner ah: We now have a three-step sea buckthorn hair care program, which consists of Sea Buckthorn Egg Conditioning Shampoo, Sea Buckthorn Egg Cream Rinse and Sea Buckthorn Leave-In Conditioner & Curl Activator. It's particularly good for curly hair, as the curl seems to hold better — without using any kind of chemicals to hold the curl. It holds it naturally. We're doing very well with this program: people with curly hair are discovering it works and that they don't have to use all kinds of hair sprays and other chemically intensive procedures to hold their body.

Readers Tell Us About

Aubrey's Amino Derm Gel Special Care Complex for Oily Skin

Dear Doctors' Prescription for Healthy Living:

I have had trouble with acne for years. My mom picked up some Amino Derm Gel at Schlarman's Health Center for me one day. My skin used to be extremely oily every morning, and usually I would have a couple new blemishes.

Now, I apply Amino Derm Gel every night, and my skin is incredibly soft and clear. And, I don't hate getting that first glimpse of myself in the mirror in the morning! This stuff is a miracle product, and now I am browsing the website to find some more great products!

Sincerely, E.E., Coldwater, Ohio

Aubrey's Blue Green Algae Herbal Antioxidant Clay Mask with Grape Seed Extract

Dear Doctors' Prescription for Healthy Living:

I love this mask! I use it weekly and after rinsing I really get the feeling that it's working because my skin feels so luxurious and supple. It even helps draw out the toxins in blemishes so much quicker when I use it just on the little spots overnight and it never irritates my skin. Nothing else compares.

Sincerely, S.T., Portland, Oregon
